Why Catholics Call Mary the Queen of Heaven
Mary, the mother of Jesus, is honoured in Catholic tradition as the Queen of Heaven because of her relationship with Christ, whom Christians recognise as King. Catholics do not regard Mary as a goddess or equal to God. Her queenship is understood as flowing entirely from her role as the mother of Jesus. The title is linked to the biblical tradition of the queen mother, whose position was respected in a king’s court. Catholics also draw on passages such as Gabriel’s announcement that Jesus would reign forever and the image of a crowned woman in Revelation. These passages are interpreted within a wider tradition of Marian devotion. Catholics honour Mary for her faith, humility and acceptance of God’s call. They believe she remains close to Christ and can intercede for believers. This honour is distinct from worship, which Catholics reserve for God alone.
