Tinubu Mourns Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, After 46-Year Reign

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, describing his passing as the end of a remarkable and historic era. The emir died in Cairo, Egypt, on September 3, 2026. He became the 16th Emir of Gumel on December 16, 1980, and ruled for nearly 46 years, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving first-class traditional rulers. Tinubu praised the late monarch as a scholar, administrator and statesman. Before ascending the throne, he served in the Gumel Native Authority, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the old Kano State government, where he was Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture. The President said the emir promoted peace, education, Islamic scholarship, unity and community development in Jigawa State. He extended condolences to the royal family, the Gumel Emirate Council and the people of Jigawa State.
