Nigeria Confirms Imported Ebola Case Within 24 Hours After Months of Preparedness
Nigeria confirmed an imported Ebola case within 24 hours after months of heightened surveillance and preparedness. The patient, who recently arrived from Uganda, is receiving treatment in isolation in the FCT. Health authorities have begun contact tracing and initially identified 44 close contacts, including health workers, caregivers, patients and travel contacts. Facilities have been asked to promptly isolate and report suspected cases while maintaining infection-control measures. Officials say the response draws on lessons from Nigeria’s successful containment of Ebola in 2014. The country is also monitoring the wider regional outbreak, including cases reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It seems Nigeria got this one right. Everyone involved in the early response deserves credit.
