Why I Believe Jesus, Not Peter, Is the Rock in Matthew 16
After considering Catholic teaching and arguments about this passage, I have re-examined the belief that Peter is the rock Jesus refers to. I believe Christ was speaking about Himself instead. In Matthew 16:18–19, Jesus tells Peter that he is Peter and says, “upon this rock I will build my church.” He also speaks of giving Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven and the authority to bind and loose. What does “this rock” mean in the passage? I believe it refers to Christ, not Peter.
