Population Isn’t Nigeria’s Bane – Corruption and Bad Governance Are
Many blame Nigeria’s large population for persistent poverty. But India has over 1.4 billion people while Nigeria has about 220 million. Yet Nigeria hosts far more people living in extreme poverty. Population clearly isn’t the issue. Nigeria is rich in oil, gas, minerals, and arable land. However, successive governments have let corruption and waste steal those resources. India, with fewer natural resources, chose to invest in manufacturing, education, and infrastructure instead. Nigeria’s budgets often remain largely unimplemented. In 2024, capital spending hit only 43 percent. The 2025 capital budget saw near-zero releases and a 70 percent deferment to 2026. This fiscal mismanagement stalls growth and deepens poverty. Debt servicing now consumes about 69 percent of revenue. Insecurity—from banditry to farmer-herder clashes—further hinders industry and agriculture. Until corruption, weak institutions, and poor leadership are tackled, reforms will fail and poverty will persist.
