Katsina Cleric’s Killing Raises Fresh Alarm Over Religious Extremism
The killing of Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, has renewed concerns about religious extremism and the safety of clerics who promote peaceful coexistence. Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, were shot outside his home on October 26. Ansaru claimed responsibility and alleged that Masussuka’s interfaith teachings were the motive, although police have not confirmed the group’s involvement. The cleric had reportedly faced threats over his calls for Muslims and Christians to live peacefully together. The case has also drawn attention to a viral video in which children were heard chanting violent anti-Christian words. Izala leaders condemned the video, while police arrested the man said to have led the chant. The incidents underline the need to investigate those responsible for violence, reject hate-based teachings and protect voices calling for peace.
