How Dr Stella Adadevoh Helped Nigeria Contain the 2014 Ebola Outbreak
Nigeria faced a major health emergency in July 2014 when Patrick Sawyer arrived in Lagos from Liberia while infected with Ebola. At First Consultants Hospital, Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh suspected Ebola and insisted that he remain in isolation despite pressure to release him. Her decision gave health authorities crucial time to trace contacts, monitor possible exposures and contain the virus before it spread widely across Lagos. Nigeria eventually recorded 20 Ebola cases and eight deaths, including Dr Adadevoh and other health workers. Dr Adadevoh died on 19 August 2014 after contracting the virus while treating Sawyer. She was later honoured nationally and internationally, while the 2016 film "93 Days" brought wider attention to the sacrifice of the medical workers who helped stop the outbreak.
