Why Traditional Institutions Still Matter in Nigeria’s Nation Building
Traditional institutions remain important pillars of Nigerian society. Emirs, obas, chiefs and village heads preserve cultural values, strengthen community identity and provide trusted leadership at the grassroots. Their closeness to the people makes them valuable in resolving disputes, promoting peace and supporting community security. Traditional rulers can also help government programmes succeed by mobilising residents around health, education, security and development initiatives. Nigeria should define clearer roles for traditional institutions in local governance while protecting them from excessive political interference. Supporting cultural education, youth engagement and modern communication can help these institutions remain relevant and effective in building stronger communities.
