Outrage Over Pastor’s Proposal to Find Paid, Non-Autistic Wife for Adopted Son
Pastor Chibuzor Gift Chinyere of Omega Power Ministries faced backlash after posting an advert seeking a non-autistic woman to marry his adopted autistic son. He offered lifelong financial support, accommodation, medical care and overseas vacations for both couples. The pastor said the young man’s sexual urges were uncontrollable and worrying, especially around other vulnerable children. He argued that legalizing a marriage would prevent wrongdoing and protect everyone in the home. Many Nigerians condemned the move, accusing him of treating his son like a commodity. After the uproar, the pastor apologised and defended the idea by pointing to other unions between disabled men and able-bodied women. Online reactions ranged from outrage at the commodification of disability to calls for better sexual education and care strategies for autistic individuals.
