Can Atiku Defeat Tinubu in 2027? The Coalition Challenge Behind the Numbers
Atiku Abubakar’s route to the presidency in 2027 depends on more than his personal popularity. He must build a broad national coalition, meet the constitutional spread requirement and finish ahead of President Bola Tinubu and other major candidates. In 2023, Tinubu won with 8.79 million votes, ahead of Atiku’s 6.98 million. Peter Obi polled 6.10 million votes, while Rabiu Kwankwaso received 1.50 million. The opposition’s combined total was larger than Tinubu’s, but those votes cannot simply be transferred to one candidate. Atiku’s support was strongest in parts of the North, while he struggled in key southern battlegrounds. Tinubu retains major advantages through incumbency, APC structures and his South-West base. Atiku would need to cut Tinubu’s margins there while expanding support in the South-East, South-South and North-Central. Peter Obi’s decision will be crucial. If both men run strong campaigns, another divided opposition could favour Tinubu. A credible alliance or consensus ticket could change the electoral equation, but leadership ambitions and party differences remain serious obstacles.
