Lagos Records 33,009 Domestic and Sexual Violence Cases, With 10,613 Children Affected

Lagos State recorded 33,009 domestic and sexual violence cases between September 2021 and July 2026, according to the state government. Domestic violence was the most reported category, with 13,515 cases. The figures were released at the start of the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The state’s response agency said it handles more than 300 clients monthly through walk-ins and its virtual referral service. The data included 1,171 defilement cases, 420 rape cases, 428 sexual-harassment cases and 797 reports of child abuse or physical assault. It also identified 10,613 children who suffered emotional abuse after being exposed to violence at home. Women accounted for 88% of reported survivors, while 30% of women who reported abuse said they were pregnant when the violence occurred. Officials cautioned that a drop in reported cases does not necessarily mean the actual level of violence has reduced, as reporting is affected by awareness, access to support and survivors’ willingness to come forward.
