Twelve Arraigned in Awka for Child Abuse and Illegal Impregnation
On July 8, a Gender Magistrate Court in Awka arraigned twelve suspects on charges of defilement, child abuse, abduction and rape. The cases emerged from separate investigations by the Anambra State Police Command. Three accused men face charges for abducting and defiling a 14-year-old in Nanka. One suspect was charged with defiling an 11-year-old girl along Slaughter Lane, Awka. Four others are alleged to have raped a 19-year-old woman on separate occasions, leading to her pregnancy. Charity and Chidiere Anakwe were arraigned for assaulting their 12-year-old house help. Chukwudi Joseph also faces assault charges involving a 12-year-old in Ozubulu, while Chibuike Agu is accused of defiling a 13-year-old girl in Onitsha. The court ordered all suspects remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre pending further hearings. The police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence and urged the public to report every case of abuse for confidential handling.
