Chekwube-Chukwu: A Brother’s Lament

Continue in hushed whispers. I dared not ask the truth for fear our mother would overhear and leave. A bus arrived with a casket. My tears flowed like a storm until they ran dry. Inside was you, my lone brother, Chekwube-Chukwu. You suffered internal bleeding after a ruptured liver. You left home for what you thought was a short trip. On that road in Lagos, a truck struck you. Do not say I am gone. I remain with you. Just as your name means “Trust God,” I will return. In 2002, hope was reborn with the birth of Edwin Obasiakasie Obinna.
