Nigerian Engineer Shares Racism, Visa Costs and Life in Scotland
A Nigerian electrical engineer who moved from Nasarawa State to Scotland in 2023 shares his experience of building a life in the UK. He discusses the harsh winter, finding work, immigration uncertainty and the support he received from friends and his wife. He recalls being racially abused by a stranger while making a delivery, saying the incident left him feeling vulnerable as a minority. He also explains that earning abroad does not always mean financial security, especially with rent, bills and family visa costs running into thousands of pounds. Despite the challenges, he values the safety, workplace inclusion and engineering experience he has gained. He hopes to return to Nigeria eventually and contribute to improving the country’s electricity sector.
