Table Tennis Scoring Rules: How Points, Games and Matches Are Won

In table tennis, a player wins a point when an opponent fails to make a legal serve or return. Points are also awarded for faults such as hitting the ball twice, touching the table with the free hand, moving the playing surface or touching the net. A game is won by the first player to reach 11 points. If the score reaches 10–10, a player must lead by two points to win. Competitive matches are commonly played as best of five or best of seven games. Under the expedite system, the receiver wins the point after making 13 successful returns in one rally. Umpires may also award penalty points for repeated misconduct.
