Diego Simeone says Ademola Lookman was deployed as a central striker because Atletico Madrid were short of recognised forwards for their La Liga opener against Malaga. Atletico won the match 2-0, with Julián Álvarez left out of the squad and Alexander Sorloth unavailable through injury. Lookman was therefore asked to operate in the unfamiliar No. 9 role. Simeone said the decision was driven by “creativity” and the need to find solutions that could improve the team. The Nigerian international’s versatility could give Atletico another option in attack as the season progresses.
