27 Arrested in Lagos Over Alleged Overhead Bridge Pillar Vandalism

27 Arrested in Lagos Over Alleged Overhead Bridge Pillar Vandalism — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Twenty-seven young men were reportedly arrested in Lagos over allegations that they removed iron from the pillars of an overhead bridge to sell as scrap. The allegation raises serious concerns about vandalism of public infrastructure and the danger it poses to road users. Public facilities, including schools, hospitals, transformers, boreholes and roads, should be protected from theft and damage. Poverty and unemployment are major social problems, but they do not excuse acts that put lives at risk. Those found responsible should face due process, while authorities also address the wider conditions that make scrap-related vandalism persistent.
