Tax Return, Tax Rebate and Tax Refund: What Nigerians Need to Know
A tax return is the formal report you file with the tax authority. It shows your income, allowable deductions, taxes already paid and your overall tax position. Filing a return does not automatically mean you will receive money back. A tax rebate is a reduction in tax that is available only where a specific law or incentive provides for it. You must meet the stated conditions before you can claim it. For example, a qualifying taxpayer may receive a rebate for filing and paying within a required period. A tax refund is different again. It applies when you have paid more tax than you actually owe and are entitled to have the excess returned or set off against another tax liability. As Nigeria’s tax reforms take effect, taxpayers should check the relevant law and confirm whether they qualify for any rebate, relief or refund.
