Doctors Remove Eight Nails From Woman’s Intestine After Four-Day Monitoring
A 30-year-old woman was treated after swallowing eight nails that became lodged in her intestines. She was admitted with severe stomach pain and was already receiving psychiatric care for pica, a condition involving compulsive consumption of non-food items. Doctors monitored her with scans every 12 hours, hoping the nails would pass naturally. The sharp objects instead moved through her abdomen and clustered near the junction of the small and large intestines, where they posed a risk of perforation. After four days with little progress, the medical team removed all eight nails through a colonoscopy. She suffered only superficial abrasions and had no further complications, while continuing outpatient psychiatric follow-up.
