Abia Women Protest Alleged Crop Destruction by Herders in Umunneochi
Women from Obinolu Ngodo in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State protested at the council secretariat over alleged destruction of their farms by grazing cattle. The protesters said cassava, maize, beans and melon were uprooted or trampled. They also said some farmers now fear going to their farms and warned that continued losses could threaten household food supplies. Council Chairman Sunny Afurobi said the council would investigate the complaints. He later convened a security meeting with community leaders, security officials, Hausa community leaders and cattle breeders' representatives. No arrests or formal action had been announced at the time of the report.
