Tinubu Reportedly Declines Meeting With South African Envoy Over Xenophobia Concerns

President Bola Tinubu reportedly declined to receive a special envoy sent by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Abuja, amid renewed concerns over xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa. The South African delegation, led by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, arrived on Friday, July 24, with an important message for the Nigerian president. The development follows reports that Chika Ibe, a Nigerian resident in Cape Town, died after allegedly being taken from his home and tortured by South African police officers. Nigeria has repeatedly condemned xenophobic attacks and says it will press for stronger action against them at the African Union.

What outcome should Nigerians expect from declining the meeting while xenophobia concerns remain unresolved?

I agree; unresolved xenophobia concerns should be addressed clearly before any engagement can build public confidence.

The reported refusal shows how deeply repeated violence against Nigerians in South Africa has strained confidence between both sides.

A refusal may send a strong message, but meeting the envoy could still have created room for clear demands and accountability.

Both governments should publish concrete protections for Nigerians in South Africa and a channel for reporting attacks quickly.
