Kemi Badenoch Backs Bill to End Benefits for Polygamous Marriages in UK
Kemi Badenoch has backed a private member’s bill aimed at ending legacy benefit payments for additional spouses in polygamous marriages recognised overseas. Although polygamy is illegal in the UK, some overseas marriages remain recognised for limited benefit purposes. Under older rules, an additional spouse may receive extra pension credit or housing benefit. Officials estimate that only about six polygamous households still receive such support. The proposed bill would also clarify that benefits cannot be claimed through certain close-relative marriages conducted abroad. Supporters say the change would close an outdated loophole, while critics argue it could disproportionately affect some migrant Muslim communities.
