Ondo Alcohol Poisoning: Police Arrest 14 as 29 Deaths Are Investigated
Police in Ondo State have arrested 14 people over suspected poisonous alcoholic drinks linked to the deaths of 29 residents in Odigbo Local Government Area. The suspects include alleged sellers and consumers of the drinks. Police said substances suspected to be methanol were recovered and sent for forensic examination. Investigators are tracing the source, production, composition and distribution of the drinks to determine their link to the deaths. Health officials have recorded 60 suspected cases, mainly across Araromi-Obu, Orita Odigbo, Newtown, Odole, Okele and Oniparaga. Several affected residents are receiving assessment and treatment, while post-mortem examinations are underway. Residents have been advised to avoid locally brewed, unlabeled or suspicious alcoholic drinks and herbal concoctions as the investigation continues.
