What I’ve Learned About Managing Money and Payments on Work Trips Abroad
I travel abroad for work fairly often, and booking the flight is usually the easy part. The real stress starts with currency exchange, card payments, mobile data, hotel charges and getting help when something goes wrong. I now check exchange rates before I leave and avoid changing too much cash at once. Airport exchange counters can be convenient, but their rates are often poor. I also try to pay in the local currency where possible, since merchant or ATM conversion to naira can come with an unfavourable rate. Card declines are another major problem, even when there is enough money in the account. I travel with at least two payment options and plan ahead for internet access, especially because banking OTPs may still go to my Nigerian number. Hotel bookings also need close attention, as taxes, deposits and delayed refunds can complicate work-trip reimbursement. For people who travel internationally for business, how do you handle cash, cards, digital wallets and mobile data? What is the worst payment or booking problem you have faced while abroad?
