Gumi Condemns Alleged Vandalism of Alakija–FESTAC Bridge Pillars

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has condemned the alleged vandalism of the bridge linking Alakija and FESTAC in Lagos State, describing it as “pure wickedness.” A viral video reportedly shows suspected scavengers breaking sections of the bridge’s concrete pillars to remove the reinforcing iron rods inside. Police officers were also seen clearing shanties beneath the bridge. An eyewitness in the video warned that several pillars may have been damaged and said continued removal of the rods could weaken the structure. He urged relevant authorities to secure the bridge and assess the extent of the damage.

What protection or monitoring is in place around this bridge, especially if people can reportedly chip away at its concrete pillars?

Allegations like this are disturbing because damage to a public bridge can put everyday commuters at risk, not just government property.
