Supreme Court Upholds Veterans’ Land Rights and Restores Major General Sani’s Rank
After years of litigation, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has ruled in favour of a group of military veterans in their dispute with the Nigerian Army. The judgment confirms their entitlement to Plot 2303 Asokoro Cad A04 and restores Major General Ibrahim Sani’s rank. The case, filed as SC/1497C/2019, challenged the Special Court Martial’s earlier conviction and property decisions. Justice Obande Festus Ogbuinya, writing for a five-member panel, dismissed the Army’s appeal and affirmed the Court of Appeal’s order for retrial. Veterans and their families celebrated the ruling as a vindication of their service and sacrifices. Legal observers say the decision reinforces the courts’ role in protecting service members’ welfare and sets an important precedent for post-service entitlements.
