Presidency Disputes Atiku’s Claim That Northern Borders Remain Closed

The Presidency has rejected Atiku Abubakar’s claim that border closures have damaged legitimate cross-border trade and worsened unemployment in northern Nigeria. Atiku said he would reopen the borders if elected president in 2027. He argued that traders and small businesses in states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin depend on cross-border commerce for their livelihoods. Presidential adviser Sunday Dare said Nigeria’s land and air borders are open for lawful trade, while restrictions target illegal activities. He cited the reopening of the Kamba and Tsamiya routes, saying the move has revived trade, transport and other businesses in border communities.
