Saudi Arabia Removes Jerusalem Pledge From School Textbooks, Israeli Group Praises Reform

An Israeli research group has praised Saudi Arabia for removing the phrase “Muslims will never give up Jerusalem” from school textbooks. Its latest review says Saudi authorities also removed or shortened some Quranic and Hadith passages, changed references to Israel and dropped the Palestine label from some maps. The group still criticised textbooks that describe Israel as an occupation and recount an alleged attempt by Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann to persuade King Abdulaziz to abandon Palestine. The report says Saudi curriculum reforms show gradual moderation toward Israel and Zionism. Critics argue that these changes come while tensions over Al-Aqsa Mosque, Israeli settlements and Palestinian statehood remain unresolved. I believe Saudi Arabia, despite being custodian of Islam’s holiest sites, is increasingly doing Israel’s bidding. Critics of Saudi-Israel rapprochement will not be pleased.
