20 Years After: Remembering Sultan Muhammadu Maccido’s Legacy of Peace
Thursday, 29 October 2026 marks 20 years since the death of Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido, the 19th Sultan of Sokoto. He led the Sokoto Caliphate from 1996 until his death in the 2006 ADC Airlines crash, which also claimed the lives of his son, Senator Badamasi Maccido, and a grandson. Known for his calm and consultative style, Sultan Maccido served as president-general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. Former President Shehu Shagari described him as a man of peace who acted more than he spoke. He supported polio immunisation, HIV/AIDS awareness and dialogue between Muslims and Christians. As his family marks the anniversary, they urge Nigerian leaders to embrace unity, compassion, accountability and service. They also renew calls for stronger aviation safety measures. What lessons can today’s leaders draw from Sultan Maccido’s life and leadership?
