Why Goals Alone Do Not Tell the Full Story of a Striker
Goals are the headline, but they are not the full match report. Two strikers may both score 15 goals, yet one may have played far fewer minutes, taken no penalties or received fewer clear chances. Goals per 90 minutes and non-penalty goals can make the comparison fairer. Chance quality matters too. Expected goals (xG) helps show how likely a player’s chances were to end in goals. Shot volume and touches in the box show how often a striker gets into dangerous areas, while assists, key passes and hold-up play reveal how much he creates for others. A striker can also help his team through pressing, intelligent runs and by drawing defenders away from teammates. Goals remain the most important measure for a No. 9, but a proper assessment should also consider efficiency, creativity, off-ball work and tactical role. Which non-scoring quality matters most to you?
