1 / 4

The Federal Government will temporarily close the First Niger Bridge between Onitsha and Asaba from Monday, September 7 to Monday, September 21, 2026, for emergency repairs. The Ministry of Works said scavengers had removed critical bolts, nuts and steel components from parts of the bridge. Some sections of the carriageway and expansion joints have also deteriorated. Repairs will include resurfacing damaged sections, replacing affected components and carrying out safety works. Solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras are also planned to improve security. Motorists will be diverted through the Second Niger Bridge via the Obosi axis during the closure. Road signs, barriers and traffic personnel will be deployed to manage movement.
