UN, GEF Commit $78m to Great Green Wall Restoration Programme Including Nigeria
The United Nations and the Global Environment Facility have announced a $78 million package to restore degraded land and strengthen livelihoods in nine Great Green Wall countries, including Nigeria. The programme aims to restore more than 270,000 hectares of land and support about five million people across the Sahel. It will target ecosystems that sustain farming, grazing, water resources and rural incomes as the region faces worsening heat and land degradation. In Nigeria, the initiative will support women-led enterprises. Across the participating countries, projects will include drought-resilient land management, forest restoration and wetland rehabilitation. Additional backing from international partners is expected to raise the programme’s total value to more than $500 million. The Great Green Wall was launched by the African Union in 2007 to combat desertification, drought and land degradation across the Sahel.
