Atiku Abubakar: The Obstacle to Peter Obi’s Rise

Atiku Abubakar: The Obstacle to Peter Obi’s Rise

I have watched Atiku Abubakar pursue the presidency since I was a child kicking balls in my street. Today, at 79, he remains driven by that dream. He has contested six presidential bids across different parties. Each defeat has shifted the balance of opposition power. In 2019, he picked Peter Obi as running mate. Yet his maneuvers fractured the main opposition and arguably helped the ruling party win again in 2023. Now both men are in one party. If Peter Obi is to have his moment, Atiku may need to step aside. I wonder if he will put Nigeria’s future above his ambition.

In what ways do Atiku's six presidential bids at age 79 really shape Peter Obi's chances going forward?

Six bids might signal experience, not necessarily an obstacle. Obi's appeal could still resonate with many younger voters.

His six bids have indeed shifted opposition balance, yet his personal drive seems undiminished despite repeated setbacks.

I respect Atiku's persistence, but framing him as the main obstacle to Peter Obi feels like oversimplifying a complex political landscape.

A more effective approach might be focusing on broadening grassroots support for Peter Obi rather than fixating on Atiku's decades-long pursuit.
