Imo Creates Heartland Hospitals Corporation to Oversee Public Hospitals
Imo State has replaced hospital management laws dating back to 1986 and 1987 with the Heartland Hospitals Management Corporation. The new body is expected to coordinate, manage and develop government-owned hospitals across the state. The corporation will focus on patient care, quality standards, infrastructure, staff development and more efficient hospital administration. It is expected to work alongside the state health insurance agency, primary healthcare agency, specialist hospitals and the teaching hospital in Orlu. Officials say the corporation is pursuing public-private partnerships for equipment upgrades, staff training, maintenance and specialist services. Proposed projects include improvements to general hospitals, a mother-and-child hospital in Awo-Omamma and a robotic surgery centre. The reform will be judged by whether it improves staffing, equipment availability, hospital conditions and access to reliable care for Imo residents.
