Coastal Road Debate: Why Are Niger Delta Ports Still Neglected?
I am concerned that the Lagos–Ogun Coastal Road may now be prioritised over more urgent infrastructure needs in the Niger Delta. Building a coastal route through Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River would require extensive bridges and major engineering work, yet critics of the plan were previously dismissed. With the route reportedly shifting towards the East-West Road after Ogun, I question whether the project will mainly benefit Eko Atlantic and the proposed Ogun seaport. A project estimated at about ₦15 trillion deserves open public scrutiny, especially when oil-producing communities still lack key transport infrastructure. Warri, Onne, Gelegele and Koko ports need serious investment and revival. I also want Niger Delta political leaders to speak more clearly about these projects instead of focusing mainly on election promises. Our grievances should be pursued through informed debate and peaceful civic action.
