58 Kaduna Women Rebuild Livelihoods After Fistula Treatment and Skills Training
Fifty-eight women in Kaduna have completed skills training and received starter packs after successful treatment for vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a childbirth-related injury that can cause continuous urine leakage, stigma and social isolation. The Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs and its health partners said the programme combines surgery with rehabilitation, helping survivors regain confidence, earn an income and reintegrate into their families and communities. The beneficiaries are also expected to form a cooperative society for mutual support and economic development. Nigeria is estimated to have more than 114,000 women and girls living with obstetric fistula, with about 12,000 new cases recorded yearly. Health officials called for better maternal healthcare, skilled birth attendance, early referrals and stigma-free access to free treatment for affected women.
