How Soil and Poultry Sensors Are Helping Jos Farmers Increase Yields
Small solar-powered sensors are helping some farmers in Jos make better decisions about irrigation, fertiliser and livestock conditions. A Plateau pepper farmer reportedly installed soil probes that monitor moisture, temperature and pH. The readings go straight to his phone, helping him water and fertilise based on actual soil conditions rather than guesswork. He says his pepper harvest rose by about 400kg, an increase of roughly 20%. A poultry farmer also uses coop sensors to monitor temperature, humidity and air quality. Phone alerts warn her when conditions become unsafe, reducing flock losses and cutting down on overnight checks. Similar Nigerian precision-agriculture tools combine sensors, cameras and AI to guide irrigation and fertiliser use. The equipment can be costly for small farmers, but higher yields and fewer losses may justify the investment.
