Freed Oyo Teacher Recounts Harrowing 56-Day Captivity by ISWAP Gunmen
Mr Olatunde Olutoye, a teacher and school counsellor, was kidnapped during an attack on his school in Oyo State and held by men claiming to be ISWAP for 56 days. He injured his leg jumping from a window and hid under leaves before being discovered. During captivity in the forest, he and other victims survived on plain rice, beans and salt. He also received medication that unexpectedly eased his arthritis within minutes. The captors allowed quiet prayers but warned against loud worship. After weeks of trekking and a tense motorcycle transfer, they were handed over to DSS operatives who confirmed their rescue. Olutoye paid tribute to two colleagues, Mr Michael Oyedokun and Deacon Olaleye, who lost their lives in the attack. He has since received fresh clothes in Ibadan and been reunited with his family.
