Nigeria Now Has 309 Licensed Universities After Approval of 33 New Institutions

Nigeria’s higher education sector has expanded after the Federal Government and the National Universities Commission approved 33 new universities, bringing the number of licensed institutions nationwide to 309. The approvals include seven federal universities, six state-owned universities and 20 private universities. They include specialised institutions focused on health sciences, agriculture, technology, environmental studies, education, aeronautics and communication. The expansion is intended to create more admission opportunities for qualified candidates who are unable to secure university places each year. The NUC also approved 879 academic programmes under the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards framework, which introduces a 70:30 balance between national core content and institution-specific courses. Education stakeholders say the new institutions must be supported with adequate funding, infrastructure, lecturers, research facilities and quality assurance to ensure that increased access leads to better learning outcomes.
