Livestock Minister Calls for Abattoirs Near Farms to End Long-Distance Animal Transport

Nigeria should process livestock closer to where animals are raised instead of transporting them thousands of kilometres before slaughter, Livestock Development Minister Idi Maiha has said. He spoke at the 2026 Animal Science Meeting in Abuja and said the government is establishing standard abattoirs in Edo and Plateau states. He said shorter transport routes could reduce animal deaths and accidents, create jobs and make better use of livestock by-products.
