My Six-Year-Old Snake Plant Finally Bloomed in Port Harcourt
I rescued a snake plant in 2020 after my neighbour moved away and discarded several plants. I kept it outdoors in front of my Port Harcourt home, where it grew quickly and produced several new plants. I later repotted them in perforated food-grade paint buckets to improve air circulation. During the mix of intense sunshine and heavy rainfall in late July and early August 2026, one of the plants unexpectedly produced a tall flower stalk. I monitored the bloom for about three weeks. It reached its peak after two weeks, but it was not pollinated and produced no seeds. The flowers had no noticeable scent, despite claims that snake-plant flowers are fragrant. After the petals fell, I cut the remaining stalk at the base and continued caring for the plant. It remained healthy, showing that flowering does not necessarily mean a snake plant is dying. It was my first time seeing one bloom, and I was delighted.
