Atiku, Makinde Absent as Parties, Candidates Sign 2027 Peace Accord

Political parties and presidential and National Assembly candidates have signed the First National Peace Accord, pledging to conduct issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. The accord, organised by the National Peace Committee and The Kukah Centre in Abuja, commits signatories to reject violence, hate speech, personal attacks, misinformation and other actions that could undermine the electoral process. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde were among notable opposition presidential candidates absent from the event. President Bola Tinubu, represented by SGF George Akume, said elections must not be treated as a do-or-die contest. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan also warned parties against divisive ethnic and religious rhetoric, premature victory claims, and the use of social media or artificial intelligence to spread unverified information. INEC says presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
