Demosthenes’ Half-Shaved Head: A Lesson in Building Discipline
Before Demosthenes became one of ancient Greece’s greatest speakers, he struggled with a weak voice, short breath and unclear delivery. His early speeches were reportedly shouted down. According to Plutarch’s account, he built an underground study and practised there daily for months. To stop himself from abandoning the work, he shaved one side of his head. He knew he would be too embarrassed to go out in public, so staying in to practise became the easier option. The lesson is not that willpower must always be stronger.
