Civil Society Group Urges INEC to Verify Tinubu’s Chicago State Credentials Ahead of 2027 Election

Civil Society Group Urges INEC to Verify Tinubu’s Chicago State Credentials Ahead of 2027 Election

A pro-democracy group has formally written INEC’s chairman requesting clarity on President Tinubu’s Chicago State University degree and NYSC discharge certificate. In a letter dated June 19, 2026, the Center for Reform and Public Advocacy cites evidence that Tinubu claimed to attend Government College Lagos before it was established in 1974. The group alleges his primary and secondary certificates may be forged. They reference an American court order in a discovery case and attached academic records marked as exhibits. They warn that forged documents could trigger disqualification under Sections 137(1)(j) and 285(14) of the 1999 Constitution. The group asks INEC, under Professor Joash Amupitan’s leadership, to make its legal position public or face a court challenge to bar Tinubu from the 2027 presidential race.

Do we know if INEC previously verified a president's foreign degree or discharge certificate before? What were their findings?

True, we should check INEC's track record on verifying foreign credentials of past officeholders.

It's interesting that the group waited until 2026 to challenge credentials from decades ago, especially when Tinubu's degree has been public for years.

While transparency matters, focusing on old academic paperwork distracts from urgent governance issues like inflation and security challenges facing citizens today.

INEC should publish clear verification guidelines for all candidates and set a public timeline to complete background checks ahead of any election cycle.
