MACBAN Warns Rising Meat Imports Could Hurt Nigerian Livestock Producers
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has warned that increased imports of beef and other meat products could weaken local livestock production and put producers out of business. Its president, Baba Othman-Ngelzarma, said Nigerian livestock farmers already face high feed and transport costs, insecurity, reduced grazing land, poor infrastructure, limited access to finance and climate-related pressures. He urged the Federal Government to assess the effect of meat imports on local production, jobs, investment and food security. MACBAN said imports needed to meet genuine shortages should support domestic production rather than replace it.
