How to Secure Funded MSc and PhD Positions in the US and Canada
A funded graduate offer is more than admission. It should clearly state whether tuition is waived, the amount of the living stipend, health-insurance and fee deductions, summer funding, and how long the support will last. Applicants should also distinguish between teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships and partial scholarships. US and Canadian funding systems work differently. Many US PhD programmes admit students into a departmental cohort before they choose a supervisor, while Canadian thesis-based programmes often require a supervisor’s commitment before admission. Course-based master’s programmes are also far less likely to provide full funding than research or thesis streams. Before emailing a professor or paying an application fee, check their recent publications, current students, active projects and whether they are accepting applicants. A strong application should show clear research fit, a well-structured academic CV, specific recommendation letters and an SOP focused on research experience, methods and proposed questions. Always verify the programme’s priority funding deadline, international-student eligibility, tuition differential, visa requirements and whether funding covers the full duration of the degree. Do not assume an admission offer or a large-looking funding figure will cover your real yearly costs.
