Why Nigerian Pensioners Still Face Verification Queues and Delayed Payments
Retirement should provide security after decades of public service. Yet many Nigerian pensioners still endure long physical verification queues, delayed gratuities and pension payments, missing-file complaints, and biometric failures. For elderly retirees, these processes can worsen existing health challenges and strip them of dignity. The contrast with benefits available to some political officeholders continues to fuel public anger. While many retired civil servants struggle to access modest entitlements, former political leaders in some states have received or been considered for generous severance and pension packages. Pensions are deferred compensation, not charity. Governments and pension agencies should adopt safe remote verification options, clear outstanding arrears, enforce timely remittances, and hold officials accountable for the diversion or wrongful withholding of pension funds. Retirees should not have to risk their health to receive what they earned.
