HIV Patient Alleges Eviction Over Status, Seeks Help
A person living with HIV has reportedly been served a quit notice after their health status became known. If confirmed, the case highlights the stigma and housing discrimination still faced by people living with HIV in Nigeria. Nigeria’s HIV and AIDS (Anti-Discrimination) Act, 2014 prohibits discrimination based on HIV status in housing, employment and healthcare. The affected person should keep the quit notice and any messages or recordings that link the eviction to their status. Human-rights groups, legal-aid providers, HIV support networks and the National Human Rights Commission may be able to offer support. The person’s privacy should be protected, while efforts should also be made to prevent any interruption to counselling, clinic visits and antiretroviral medication.
