Ghanaian Women Protest Detention, Demand Rights and Economic Opportunities
Women from different backgrounds marched in Accra on September 29 to demand stronger protection for women’s rights, freedom of expression and economic opportunities. The protesters also called for the release of Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a nursing officer accused of aiding the publication and spread of false news connected to a social-media personality. An Accra High Court denied her bail, citing ongoing investigations and the risk of interference with digital evidence. Organisers said the protest brought together traders, mothers, professionals, artisans and young women. They submitted a petition to Ghana’s gender minister, calling for accountability, fair justice and implementation of the country’s Affirmative Action law.
