Kebbi Police Arrest 19-Year-Old Over Alleged Abduction of Newborn

Police in Kebbi State have arrested a 19-year-old woman in Zuru Local Government Area over the alleged abduction of a newborn baby. Police said the suspect allegedly took the child shortly after the baby’s mother gave birth on July 23, 2025. She was said to have offered to fetch hot water before leaving with the newborn. Investigators allege that she had falsely told her husband she was pregnant and later presented the child as hers. The baby has been recovered and reunited with its mother, while the suspect remains in custody pending charges. The case has also renewed concerns about the pressure on young married women to have children, particularly in communities where early marriage and expectations around motherhood remain widespread.
